Conflict Resolution Skills
Conflict resolution skills are all about expressing your feelings and using those to find solutions. When you learn to use conflict skills in an effective way, you can truly change the relationship in a positive way. Not only do you have the power to change the way the other person sees things, but you can also change how you view the situation.
The skills work for both good and bad relationships. With a solid understanding of the dynamics in a relationship and using techniques that apply to different types of relationships, you can start to make big changes to the way you think about your relationships. No longer will you be powerless when things go wrong in a relationship. You can change the relationship from dysfunctional to powerful and that is something you can be very proud of.
What is conflict resolution skills anyway? It is simply a set of skill that allows you to express your emotions and find effective solutions to any conflict that you might be experiencing.
So, what are some of the conflicts that conflict resolution skills might apply to? For instance, you might be having a disagreement with a friend and feel as though you are totally out of control, as if you have lost your mind has lost its grip on you. You may feel like throwing a tantrum or perhaps even taking to your bedroom to feel more comfortable.
If you continue to behave in this manner, you are providing justification for his or her destructive behavior. You are also reinforcing his or her destructive ways and therefore further giving him or her reasons to be angry and feel as though they have lost control.
Alternatives to the destructive behavior you may be engaging in must be discussed and agreed upon, even if it means that there is going to be a bit of confrontation. This is because to discuss these alternatives does not mean that you are willing to back down.
In order to have a good resolution, it is helpful to have the other person understand that there are alternatives to his or her behavior. In fact, this allows them to be reasonable.
You may, however, find yourself in a one-sided conflict, one that is completely out of your control. Instead of allowing yourself to react in a destructive manner, you must instead become more creative and expressive. In this case, conflict resolution skills can be extremely useful.
If you are confronted with a situation that is not one-sided, you must learn to take responsibility for the behavior you are engaging in and take control of the situation. In doing so, you may find that your reactions are defused and instead of making things worse, you instead create the potential for a better outcome. As you become more creative, you can find out what other alternatives to the destructive behavior exist and apply them before the problem becomes overwhelming.
Once again, the key is to be honest with yourself about the conflicts you are experiencing and to begin to work through them with your conflict resolution skills. This means that you must express your feelings and find a solution that works for you.
If you are dealing with self-esteem issues, then finding ways to improve your own self-esteem is very important. You must allow others to see that you can be a good person, even if you may not feel this way right now. This way, you are showing that you have the ability to deal with difficult situations in a healthy manner.
Assertive people tend to have a higher success rate in relationships and in general. To be assertive is to be able to effectively express your feelings and show people that you are a reliable person. Conflict resolution skills help you express those feelings and become the person you want to be in relationships.
